Thoughts on the current
issue
This issue of the Sunshine State TESOL
Journal comprises a wide variety of issues impacting the world of TESOL
in K-12 schools, tertiary language learning environments and teacher
education programs. In The Case of
Oben: Stacked Odds the issue of how current practices and
procedures stack the odds against older English Language Learners
(ELLs) in our high school system is addressed and what can be done to
reduce those odds. In Research and
Pedagogy of English as a Global Language, the issue of World
Englishes is addressed in arguing in favor of making graduate TESOL
programs more mindful of Englishes other than those found in the inner
circle of English speakers. Back to
the Future: the Beginning of the End of Classrooms Without Walls?
questions whether or not ELLs really would prefer on online environment
to learn a language rather than a face-to-face one, despite the current
trend toward online classes at the tertiary level. Additional Language Learning for
Preservice Teachers makes a case for preservice teacher
education programs to formally include learning an additional language
in addition to the tradtional education courses currently required so
as to better prepare teachers to work and empathize with their ELLs. Differentiated Placement Practices
addresses the notion that differentiated instruction can be enhanced
through the use of differentiated placement and proposes a model to
help better meet placement of ELLs. Finally, the fifth edition of Reading, Writing and Learning and Learning
in ESL: A Resource Guide for Teaching K-12 English Learners is
reviewed from the perspective of a reviewer and consumer of the book.
